Origins of Football in Wisconsin
The first form of football played in Wisconsin was played at colleges. A form of the game that originated from Europe called mob football started to become popular on college campuses in the late 1800's after it had been baned earlier for being too dangerous. The game closely resembled rugby and was very unorganized. The objective was to carry a rugby shaped ball to the goal line by any means possible. There was no standard set limit on players. It wasn't until 1876 that the game began to transition from a rugby style game, to the football that we play today. This was thanks to Walter Camp's change to the rules of rugby which basically invented American football. Eventually, organized football began to form at colleges like UW Madison and Whitewater Normal School(UW Whitewater). These two colleges played their first ever games in 1989, marking the start or organized American football in Wisconsin.
